How To Do a Breast Pump Comparison
There are several factors to consider when you are deciding on a breast pump to purchase. Some are fairly obvious, others you may not have thought of but can be very important. Below is a list of some important things to consider when doing a breast pump comparison.
1) Usage. How often are you going to be using the pump? Believe it or not, some pumps are only designed to be used occasionally for engorgement issues or to help mom produce more milk. These pumps are not durable enough to withstand the stress of every day use. Read the manufacturers specifications regarding this issue.
2) Travel. Are you going to be traveling often and needing the pump while you are? If so, you need to ensure that the pump you choose is designed to be easily transported, has several power source options, and has an internal milk storage system to preserve the milk you collect while on the road, away from refrigeration.
3) Nipple issues. Inverted or shy nipples can make pumping difficult. Manual pumps are usually recommended for this problem and some are designed specifically to help overcome this issue and create a solid milk flow.
4) Dual suction control. This is a feature that causes the price to inflate and many women do not need. A dual suction control means you can control the power of the suction to each breast individually. This is only necessary if one breast produces a lot more milk than the other.
5) Price. This one obviously speaks for itself. In general, the differences between breast pumps in certain price ranges are somewhat subtle and have more to do with comfort than anything else. Stick to what’s in your price range.
When you do a breast pump comparison, it is also a great idea to read up on customer reviews. Hearing what moms have to say about certain pumps is perhaps the best way to know if a particular pump is right for you.
